Mulago National Referral Hospital
Located in Kampala, it’s the largest hospital in Uganda and serves as a major referral center for various specialties.
Uganda has five national referral hospitals: Mulago National Referral Hospital, Kawempe National Referral Hospital, Kiruddu National Referral Hospital, Mulago Specialized Women and Neonatal Hospital, and Butabika National Referral Hospital. These hospitals provide specialized healthcare services and serve as referral centers for other hospitals in the country.
- Kawempe National Referral Hospital: Also in Kampala, it focuses on specialized care in obstetrics, pediatrics, adolescent health, and HIV/AIDS care.
- Kiruddu National Referral Hospital: Located in Kampala, it has a large infectious disease ward and specializes in the treatment of burns.
- Mulago Specialized Women and Neonatal Hospital: This hospital focuses on specialized care for women and newborns.
Butabika Hospital is a public referral psychiatric hospital owned by government of Uganda. It was opened in 1955 and has a bed capacity of 900. It is also a psychiatric teaching hospital for Makerere University.
Butabika National Referral Hospital: This hospital specializes in mental health services.
Butabika Hospital also accommodates the Institute of Psychiatric Clinical Officers (IPCO), a school administered by the Uganda Ministry of Health, which trains high school graduates to become Psychiatric Clinical Officers.
