When the National Resistance Movement (NRM), led by Yoweri Museveni, took power in 1986, it began a period of sustained economic and political renewal. During the first decade of NRM rule, the government focused on restructuring the economy through pro-market reforms and increasing the legitimacy of government institutions through political liberalization. Of recent the government is now faced with political challenges main caused by high costs of living, corruption in government departments and some incompetent government officials.
