Location
The park is located in Kasese District Western Region, Uganda and is about 350 km southwest of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda and 129 km from Fort Portal Town.  The park which was founded in 1952 is set on 1,978 sq km of land. The park sits on the equator line and was named after Queen Elizabeth II

Ecosystem
The park has diverse ecosystems, which include savannah plains, humid forests, sparkling lakes and fertile wetlands which make it ideal habitat for wildlife.

Kazinga  Channel
There are two lakes in the park,  Lake George and Lake Edward,  which are connected by Kazinga Channel. The channel is an attractive feature of Queen Elizabeth National Park as visitors see the largest concentration of hippos, elephants, buffalos, and different species of water birds by the channel. The visitors are also able to see Nile Monitor Lizard, River warthogs and many Nile crocodiles. Most animals come to the channel to search for water and fresh grass.

Wildlife

The park is a home to the world’s largest concentration of hippos, lions, chimpanzees, warthogs, buffalo, rare aquatic sitatunga antelope, giant forest hog, beautifully horned Uganda kob, topi, waterbuck, elephant, leopard, over 100 mammals and 600 bird species and famous for its tree-climbing lions.

Lake Katwe

The park is also famous for its volcanic features, comprising volcanic cones and deep craters, many with crater lakes such as Lake Katwe, from where traditional salt mining has been practiced since the 16th century.

Mountain Rwenzori

The park stretches south of Rwenzori Mountains

Mweya Peninsula

The peninsula is the hub for tourism activity and accommodation in the central section of the park

Bordering National parks and reserves
The national park includes the Maramagambo Forest which  borders Kigezi Game Reserve, Kyambura Game Reserve and Kibale National Park in Uganda, and the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Twinning arrangement
The Queen Elizabeth National Park and The Queen Elizabeth Country Park in England are twinned in a project of “cultural exchange, mutual support and has its main emphasis on supporting Conservation through working closely with and empowering local communities”.
