Location
Uganda Wildlife Education centre, set on a 72 acres piece of land, is located in Entebbe Town on the shores of Lake Victoria. The centre was established in 1952.
Collections
It has over 400 indigenous wild animals, over 500 plant species and over 250 bird species in natural setting which depict three of Uganda’s ecosystems that is the wetland, the savannah and the forest.
Animals
The most of the animals in UWEC have been rescued from smugglers, poachers or the community. Many are released into the wild after a successful rehabilitation period, while others are given a new home for education purposes or due to loss of habitat in the wild which reduces their chances of survival.
Visitors
The centre is currently receiving over 250,000 of which over 50% are students.
Mandate of the centre
‘The mandate of the centre is to rescue and rehabilitate injured, confiscated and/or orphaned wildlife. The model of conservation education promoted by UWEC is one that combines knowledge dissemination with entertainment, all developed with families in mind. UWEC thus offers a holistic experience and ensures that visitors go back home not only entertained but educated enough to move them to respect and conserve the country’s biodiversity for today and future generations.’
