The telecom sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in Uganda since 2010 when the sector was liberalised. There are currently four key players namely MTN, Warid, Airtel, Uganda Telecom limited and Orange Uganda in the sector. The mobile phones and mobile number customer base stood at over 15 million and 13.8 respectively. Statistics show that the time that individuals spend talking on phone has increased from an average of 80 minutes per person per month to over 100 minutes.
MTN has been a market leader in terms of market for some time but their leadership position has declined as competition takes hold in Uganda’s market with. The market is shared by the key players as follows. Aitel Uganda was the worst hit, losing close to 10% of its share from 35% to 25% between January last year to February 2012 where it came up with some promotions to hit the market again.
Uganda telecom limited market share increased from 20% to 23%, while warid managed to gain large market share an impressive achievement and today it has become the number one choice for a second SIM card due to their low pricing entry Strategy and on-net promotions.
