Poultry Farming in Uganda

There has been tremendous expansion of the Commercial poultry sector in the last three decades but free-range poultry still account for a greater proportion of the total poultry production in Uganda. The challenge is the free-range poultry has not undergone drastic improvement in its management system

The total poultry population in Uganda is projected at about 32.6 million birds of which 80% of the population being free-range indigenous type of breeds and the exotics contributing about 20%.

The uses of poultry are summarised as follows:

There is a lot of demand of poultry products in hotels, schools and other bigger organisations. Uganda’s poultry products are being exported to neighbouring countries.

Bio security is a practice designed to prevent the spread of disease-causing
Organisms onto farms. It is accomplished by maintaining the facility in such a way
that there is minimal traffic of biological organisms (viruses, bacteria, rodents, etc.)
across its borders.

·         They generate cash when the birds or their eggs are sold.

·         It has a potential to generate foreign exchange

·         Poultry has a social –cultural status in Uganda

·         Lack of knowledge and skills  in poultry management

·         Lack of  Capital to  put in place the necessary infrastructure

·         Lack of organised marketing infrastructure

·         Power Supply largely depends on hydro-electric power and this source of power has of recent become expensive.

·          Availability of  farm or factory logistics Infrastructure

·          Poor road network  to the farm
