Agriculture is an important versatile sector in Uganda and it employs 68% of the population, supporting millions of livelihoods and contributes substantially to the economy.
Uganda remains one of the fastest growing economies with high labour force
for skilled and unskilled labour force in the agricultural sector.
The current labour force persons aged 14- 60 stands at 11.5 million with 57% of 6.5 million categorized as youth and trainable work force. The job opportunities in formal sector are limited forcing the supplylabour supply both skilled and un skilled to resort to agriculture sector.
Labour Participation in agriculture
- Participation rate is 80% in that rural women have higher participation rates than their urban counterparts.
- Majority of the labour available to agriculture sector do not have formal training relevant to the sector.
- The labour available to agriculture can be trained to acquire relevant skills.
