Location
Murchison Falls also called Kabalega or Kabarega is a waterfall on the lower Victoria Nile River in northwestern Uganda located 32 km east of Lake Albert.
It breaks the Victoria Nile, which flows across northern Uganda from Lake Victoria to Lake Kyoga and then to the north end of Lake Albert in the western branch of the East African Rift.
They are named after geologist Sir Roderick Murchison who visited the falls In the mid-1860s with Sir Samuel White Baker.
The initial fall of River Nile at 130 feet (40 metres) is generally recognized as Murchison (Kabalega) Falls.
At the top of Murchison Falls, the Nile forces its way through a gap in the rocks, only 7 metres wide, and tumbles 43 metres then flows westward into Lake Albert.
The outlet of Lake Victoria sends around 300 cubic meters per second (11,000 ft³/s) of water over the falls, squeezed into a gorge less than ten metres (30 ft) wide.
The cataract forms the central feature of the Murchison Falls National Park situated approximately 300 kilometres by road, northwest of Kampala City.
