Location
Nakawa Commonwealth Cemetery is located the Eastern part of Kampala City in Kiswa Zone on Kampala –Luzira Road. It is about 3km from the city centre. It is a burial site for military servicemen who died in the country during the colonial period.
The cemetery has well kept grounds containing clearly marked marble gravestones bearing names and court of arms of the forces of the late servicemen.
Historical Information
The Cemetery contains 26 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War representing 19 soldiers of the East African Forces and 7 men belonging to the Uganda Police.
Significance of Nakawa Commonwealth Cemetery
The cemetery is a remembrance of over 1.7 million men and women of Commonwealth forces who died during the First World War of 1914-1918 and Second World War of 1939. There were also many civilians who died during wars as a result of enemy actions.
