Sewage Treatment Methods used by National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC)
The sewage or wastewater is polluted water that has been subjected to various uses and has undesirable physio-chemical and microbiological characteristics. The sewage has to be properly collected, transported and treated to avoid health problems to humans.
NWSC employs two types of Sewage Treatment systems namely Conventional Sewage Treatment Works (CSTW) and the Sewage Stabilization Ponds (SSP). The SSP system is one used at Bugolobi Sewage Treatment Works (BSTW) for Kampala City.
Conventional Sewage Treatment Works (CSTW)
In a CSTW there are three main stages or units of sewage treatment as follows;
- Preliminary sewage treatment
Suspended solids and organic matter in sewage are removed by use of metallic bar screens, sand trap or detractor. The organic solids are separated from liquids - Sludge treatment and digestion
Sewage purification is by bacterial activity. The bacteria remove organic matter dissolved in sewage for their own growth and replication. At the end of the stage the bacterial film is removed leaving the sludge - Drying, the sludge
At this stage the sludge is pimped into digesters where it’s digested anaerobicallly. After about 8 weeks the purified sludge is pumped into sand drying beds where it is further purified. Any water that drips from the sludge digesters and sand drying beds is pumped back into sewage treatment. Farmers collect the dried sludge for use as manure in crop and flower garden.
Rubbish Collection Companies
The private sector is a key participant in the full range of urban waste management activities including collection, transportation, treatment, processing, sorting, recycling, composting, and disposal of waste. Neighbourhood associations, communities, and small enterprises are increasingly involving themselves in the management of household and business wastes with the explicit aim of creating livelihoods and maintaining a clean and healthy living environment.
There are no free, standard rubbish or garbage collections in Uganda so unless people burn their rubbish; the rest just gets thrown anywhere and everywhere. The following are the key garbage collectors;
